It was during work experience backstage at a theatre in Copenhagen, aged 18, that Matthew first realised his passion for hair and styling. Drawn to the idea of creating looks for shoots and shows all over the globe, Matthew has never looked back! Officially starting his career at Toni & Guy in 2004, Matthew progressed to opening his own salon and has built an enviable portfolio and client list of leading names in fashion, film, music and television. His career has seen Matthew win and be nominated for a number of awards for his creativity and business acumen, travel the world heading teams backstage at fashion week, be selected as the global ambassador for TRESemme, and shoot editorial and commercial campaigns for renowned fashion and beauty brands worldwide.
The Runway| The Red Carpet
A large proportion of Matthew’s diary is dedicated to session styling. Through a combination of networking, perseverance and of course, unrivalled talent, Matthew has progressed from assistant to lead stylist, working globally on shows in New York, London and Paris.
A regular at New York Fashion Week, Matthew and his Creative Team have been heading up teams backstage since 2010, and the experience has seen him work on and create looks for Ted Baker, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Falguni & Shane Peacock, Marc Jacobs and Alice & Olivia, to name but a few.
As one of the industry’s most in-demand hair stylists, it is no surprise that Matthew’s work has taken the spotlight on the red carpet. Matthew styled Australian film actress, Emily Browning at Miu Miu’s Resort Collection Presentation in Paris, and he also created American actress and model, Gabrielle Union’s head turning tresses for Miu Miu’s Women’s Tale premiere at the 70th Venice International Film Festival. Also a professional barber, at the Lone Ranger London Premiere he was responsible for creating lead actor, Armie Hammer’s slick and stand out look.
Matthew is a natural in front of the camera; his calm and confident working style combined with his cheeky but charming personality has led to numerous television stints. In 2013, renowned model, Elle Macpherson handpicked Matthew to head up the styling team for Sky Living’s Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model. Transforming the contestants from natural beauty to super model, Matthew and his team were praised abundantly, and according to Elle Macpherson, “with Matthew on board, the girls have never looked better”.
When the TV show returned in 2016 after a short break, Matthew was once again appointed as the lead stylist for the show, heading up the Wella Professionals hair team and also styling the show’s model presenters, Abby Clancy and Paul Sculfor.
Matthew’s other TV credits range from styling guests for shows such as BBC 1’s The Graham Norton Show and BBC 2’s comedy panel show, Never mind the Buzzcocks, to creating brand new looks for the cast of ITV’s much loved reality show, The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE).
Matthew’s trend-establishing style is featured regularly in the consumer and trade press. Through the strength of his collaborations with leading photographers and creatives, along with his innate talent for creating glamour and effortless chic, Matthew contributes to the most dominant and respected image-making today. His work has featured in high end fashion titles including Vogue, Elle and Volt Magazine, and he also set the look for Daphne Selfe’s cover shoot for S Moda magazine.
Matthew’s philosophy of merging both female and male runway trends with everyday life endears both consumers and the press alike, and as a result, his views, tips and expertise are quoted regularly in a multitude of publications worldwide.
